Identity Crisis

There was a man over in India that I heard about who loved gold.  Not the precious metal, but the actual color of gold (yellow). Everything he owned was gold. All his clothes were gold; he had a yellow hat, lived in a yellow house, drove a yellow car, and had yellow curtains. All of his carpet and furniture were gold. In his bedroom, he had golden lamps, yellow pillows, yellow sheets, and even a yellow television.  However, one day he got very sick and came down with yellow fever. His doctor came out to his house to treat him but he couldn't find him, so he died.  Who are you trying to be like?  Who do you compare yourself to that you feel superior to or inferior to?  The bottom line is the bible says not to compare ourselves because of who we are and what he says we have in him (Ephesians 1:1-23).  Matter of fact the bible is clear that each of us will be judged according to every word, thought, and deed we have done, not others.  We need to understand what our worth is according to what God says; one soul is worth more than all the riches and money combined on the entire planet.  Once I realized that my life was no longer about me, but him, it simplified everything.  I didn't want to be like Superman and the rest of the Justice league in the 2004 issue of DC Comics, lost of who they were and what they actually stood for.  Since who I am and the essence of my being is rooted in him, I now understand I am the righteousness, the holiness, the fearfully and wonderfully made creation of God. He loves me, despite all my mistakes.   It's when I start putting myself back on the throne of my own heart, that's when I start to sabotage myself like cosmetic surgery on Joan Collins.  Like the dog chasing the cat down in Arizona.  One day it got so hot, he no longer chased the cat, but walked him. Now don't get me wrong, he was still after him but it was just too hot to run, so they were going at their own pace.  In order to be able to indentify with Christ, you must slow down the rigors of life. Quit trying to travel at the world's pace, you can't run someone else's race. Stop imitating others and imitate the LORD.  In the book of James 1:23 it reminds us not to just hear the word of God, but do what it says.  Once you get to this point it's proof positive that you no longer have an identity crisis, but that your roots run deep in Christ Jesus.

I think it is natural to want to have a special identity. WE want to be accepted for being something special, or doing something that makes people admire us, and see us as valuable.

But this public opinion is very fragile. It changes with the wind.

One minute, people are for us. Another minute, they turn against us.

So it is best not to place our identity with the opinion of others.

If we rest in God, and put him first, he will lift us up in a way that cannot be torn down.
